The next generation of watches: Panerai's 3D printed Submersible watch

In a world where 3D printing is all the rage, Panerai has unveiled its PAM578 Titanium Tourbillon Special Edition watch, featuring a variation of this cutting-edge technology called Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS).

DMLS is a technique that uses a laser to "weld" powdered metal together layer by layer, forming a solid structure. With each layer only 0.02mm thick, this printing method allows the creation of complex designs without the need for specialist tools. The German company EOS developed the metal sintering technology used by Panerai for this watch.

By incorporating DMLS technology into the manufacturing of the PAM578 case, Panerai was able to reduce its weight by over 40% compared to steel. Traditional manufacturing methods would have made it challenging for Panerai to achieve such a weight reduction using only titanium. The DMLS process allowed the company to create a visually similar body to their classic Luminor models, but with a hollowed-out interior that traditional instruments couldn't access. The result is a remarkable watch weighing just 90 grams despite its 48mm dimensions.

In creating this watch, Panerai and Brabus used metal 3D printing technology to craft the 47mm case using eTitanio, 100% recycled titanium powder obtained from pre-use titanium alloy scraps. The process involves layering titanium powder and using a high-powered optical laser to fuse the layers, resulting in a lightweight and structurally strong body. The 3D printed case is approximately 30% lighter than a conventional titanium case, weighing only 23.6 grams.

The Submersible S BRABUS Titanio PAM01403 further emphasizes its technological nature with a skeletonized automatic caliber P.4001/S, reducing unnecessary materials and achieving a three-day power reserve. The design features a grille dial reminiscent of a car grille, complemented by red accents and the iconic Brabus logo. The unidirectional rotating bezel, crafted by Carbotech, adds a touch of sophistication with its marbled appearance resembling damask steel. The watch comes with two straps, one in black calf leather and the other in recycled PET, in keeping with the commitment to sustainability.
